What's the difference between a healthy love and obsession?
-
I just want to make sure that I really love this person that I think about almost 24/7 and not be obsessing about it, but I have very little idea what the differences are. I'm a paramedic, and I see women who are obsessed with the man their with. That's the only thing I can think it is, b/c why else would they have so little concern for themselves that they stay with the man after he stabbed or otherwise hurt them enough to require transport by ambulance to ER. All of these women claim they're "in love" with the guy, that they think of him all the time. But I just think that looks like they're obsessed with him to the point of not even caring about their own health. Anyway, I don't understand the difference. I've never been with a person like that; I have no ability to even continue to like a person who would physically hurt me. But what's the difference between a healthy love versus an obsession?

Answer:
The difference is healthy love will not get in the way of your life constantly, with obsession you can't function otherwise (ex. hold friendships, visit family, hold a job because you're too busy with them). I'm a basic, btw :) I don't think it's obsession that make women stay, it could be several ones. The first is the guy offers her something she couldn't have on her own, (ex. she has children and he provides for them, if he leaves they will be on the street). Also have you ever heard of the concept, "learned helplessness?" It's a psychological term derived from this guy who did some morbid testing on dogs. He put them in a leash and conditioned them to hear a sound, and with that sound came intense pain. After conditioning them, he let them loose and made the same sound. The dogs knew they could run away (theoretically) but they didn't, they stayed there even though they were being shocked. Also isolation comes into play that works with manipulation. These women literally think they can't live without this guy, or he will kill them if they leave. So as a whole, it's much more complicated than to just leave if the guy hurts them because the guy has usually brainwashed them before he even lays a hand on them.

OBSESSION: Is when you are taken by someones looks (they are physically appealing to you) or perhaps you know they are not in your league (such as a famous person or you know an individual wouldn't be interest in you) and you constantly follow them around, phone them or just make a nuisance of yourself. When that person gives no indication they are equally attracted to you. You can also obsess in dreams over an individual and although you may take no action in trying to get them to notice you, your life is wrapped around that person and you shut yourself off from reality. You can't really love someone you don't know, so it can't be love. HEALTHY LOVE To love someone is to get to know them and not only become physically attracted to them at first but love them even more when you get to know their personality and grow close to each other. When in love you should feel like you're walking on sunshine, and skipping on clouds. You should be so happy your heart could burst. You can hardly wait until you see them the next time. Signs of love are when the guy (or girl) show love by expression such as you can see it in their eyes (they get so warm and mooshy) and they hug, kiss or cradle you. They see each other through the good and bad times. They can make you laugh and you have fun together. You feel whole in body, mind and spirit. That's as close as I can come to describing obsession and love.
