Does the price of an engagement ring matter?

How much to ask for engagement ring?

  • Ok, I have read the 3 month salary and 2 months salary rule thing and I honestly don't think that there should be a set rule. I have talked to my fiance about it a lot and no matter how much I try to get him to give me a price range he likes, he always ends up with "I'll let you decide on the price range and then I will let you know if it's too much". How much percent of his salary do you think is too much to ask? and how much is "alright"? Also, if you'd like to share, how much percent of your partner's salary was your engagement ring if you were ever engaged? Even though I don't like the salary rules so much, I think they could be a good "measurement tool" I'm just looking for opinions and ideas to help me a little. He makes a decent living, not TOO great but not bad at all either....if that helps

I didn't ask at all, nor did I give any input with regards to the selection of the engagement ring. In my opinion, that was his decision. On some level, I really wanted to see what he would get..lol I guess what I would be more concerned with if I were you is cut, color, clarity and carat-weight, in that order. These are what determine the quality and the real worth of a diamond. Personally I would rather have the best possible color and clarity in a brilliant cut if the carat weight is lower. so there is more to an engagement ring than how much is he spending. Don't forget that after the wedding you still have to eat and live somewhere. And don't get me wrong, I am still a female so you know the ring had to be right..lol But from a different view point. http://www.jewelry-secrets.com/Diamonds/Colorless-E-F-Diamonds/E-F-Color-Colorless-Diamonds.html

The value of a piece of metal should not be a measure of how much you care.

When my fiance proposed, he simply surprised me with the ring. I had some idea that he was shopping around, but I wasn't actually involved in the decision. He did ask me once about it, and I just told him that whatever he picked out would be fine. He was the one doing the asking, so it was all up to him. I never asked him how much he spent, and he never told me. And the ring is beautiful, so he did a great job.

Currently trending, the median price for a ring is about $1200, or about one months salary for a 26yr old in 2012. The "mean" average is around $3500-$5000. Those movie stars skew the numbers! But as always, you should only spend what you can afford. Hope this helps.

We did not look at price but what made a perfect match to my grandmothers wedding ring... the rings are 80 years apart but look like a perfect match. I would go with a carat for you engagement ring because it is a nice size to start and most jewelers will let you upgrade at a later time.

How much are you willing to spend on one for him? I think that a self designed ring set for both of you would be more personal and allow you to put funds into land, a house, savings and more.

My ring was $60 on Amazon. It's 10k white gold with a single diamond which is probably 1/4 carat. Her tastes should not be this expensive.
