What are the right questions to ask someone to really discover a personality? "indirect questions"?

I want to know someone & he is away "in another country "& we get to talk 30 min every 2 weeks & it is very hard to ask the right questions without borring him .......... pls. post any ideas about irregualr questions which can be easily answered & can allow me to discover his personality..........
