How do I make friends via chat. Yahoo Messenger sucks, there are too many chat bots and hardly any girls?

Orkut is invitees only. Plus you tend to make your life public. Yahoo 360 degrees is in beta state and not functional for India. How do I look for friends who want to share memories, experiences, help each other and be there, always, to talk to. I have plenty of guy friends and I an interested in ladies.
