Answer:
Well I am a teacher and I have had this situation in my class. I spoke to the pupil concerned and she decided that she would make a card or gift for her aunt who she was living with at the time. Other pupils that have had this problem have given gifts to grans also. If there is no one that you would want to give something like that too then talk to your teacher - if it were me I would come up with another activity that you could do or choose an activity that can be easily changed. Please don't worry about this - teachers are used to these situations and will be well aware of your feelings. Also - I am so sorry that you have lost your mum and I hope you are coping ok. Good luck and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Aww hun i'm sorry. Perhaps you can make a small scrap book or arrange some flowers that you can either take to her grave site or keep on a bookshelf.

Make a gift along with everyone else and give it to someone you admire who is like a mother to you. For example: Grandma, Aunt, etc.

no offense but if your mother died worrying about making gifts in your 5th grade class doesn't seem like it'd be high on the priority list of things to worry about .

talk to your teacher about it let her know it would upset you to have to participate, she/he should let you do something else.
