What to prepare for my first UPS Job Interview (Package Handler)?

  • I recently got a email from the UPS location I have put in, to complete the application, I did and got a Schedule Appointment Time (meaning a job interview?), they told me to arrive on time (of course), remember to wear casual slacks or jeans, and sturdy closed-toe shoe. so wearing a white collar shirt with black jeans (really black) and neck tie is ok? and for the shoes I only have a white converse (of course I have to go buy shoe for job interview) which shoes would u recommend? and the email said its a information session? is that the real interview? why casual slacks or jeans why not dressing in a suit??? THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IM SO WORRIED ABOUT is what questions would they ask me? this is my first ever job interview how do I prepare for this? p.s. I am a college freshman with no single prior work experience Thank You! (if you are a current UPS employee or Part-Time package handler please comment! it would get rid of my fears)

    Actually you will be going in to do a walk around and they will be showing you what your job will cover. the interview will come later after they show you around. so a few quick pointers. don't bring a cell phone with you, no knifes, and show up about 15 min early so you have time to go over the material they have for you. the Neck tie is not necessary for the walk thru. A nice shirt, casual slacks (Ex a good pair of jeans no holes no cuts, not baggy not to tight. a pair that fit you) Shoes... I would recommend sturdy sneakers that would allow you to move freely but will stay on your feet. the session will be about an hour long so make sure u use the bathroom be for you get there... last thing to do is Research the company and google questions they may ask you once you do go in for the actual interview.

All you need are arms and legs that work . You want to wear clothes that you don't mind getting really dirty and or sweating in. However know that it is winter now so you will need long johns and sweatshirts, you will be working in a warehouse. You will feel all the conditions of the weather outside. For the interview, they don't want to hear if your claustrophobic, they won't have pity. Stress how important it is to work for a company that judges you by your work ethic. You will score points. Being in school is great too, tuition reimbursement is a plus. Shoes you want leather steel toe non slip, you will be wearing them all night they will hurt your feet after while if you get the wrong size or if they are cheap so make sure you don't skimp on them. Not sneakers packages drop on your feet often.

The tie is unnecessary. All the rules for basic job interviews apply, be confident, use eye contact but don't stare, etc. etc. Google it. UPS is a physical job. It will help you if you appear strong and healthy. Ok, it probably helps in any job but in this one if you get it you will start by loading trucks and it is exhausting. They may have you take a test which tests your honesty and memory skills. UPS has a pretty good program of advancement and as a sorter(next step after handler) you'll need to memorize hundreds of zip codes. If you get the job you will be watched and tested for observation skills and honesty. You may be set up as a test. This happened to a buddy of mine and luckily he passed. It's the right time of year to get a job with them due to the holidays. Unless you blow it you should get it but staying there through Feb. may be a challenge. Work very hard and offer to work extra. Don't wait to be asked. Show initiative and ask for study materials for the next level. They'll keep you loading trucks for a while probably. Good luck.
