Hi Jessica! The 1st poster, Nicki H actually shared a list of legit companies, which is rare to find on Yahoo Answers considering that the majority of posters will spam. I would just like to add that there are some trust worthy companies that offer online customer service jobs as well. Some reputable employers that offer employment from home are: Apple (At Home Advisor) Home Shopping Network (Customer Service) 1800Flowers (Customer Service) Amazon (Virtual Call Center) U-haul (E-sales & Reservation) You can also find job leads on work at home forums or by utilizing work at home websites and blogs.

I know of a particular website http://www.fivergigs.co.uk where people who are skillful sell their services for £5 and people who are in need of such services pay to have them. It is particularly useful site for freelancers. Transaction Payments are carried out via Paypal.
Well it depends on what you are able to do. Working on the internet from home is pretty different then a normal job. First of all don't pay anything to anyone, you don't need to pay to work, that just ridiculous. Its all about getting small jobs or orders, usually directly from clients. This kind of jobs are usually short term or very small, but if you have enough of them you can turn around a good buck. All you need are skills and the ability to keep your clients coming (get them into long term). There are a lot of different jobs like: programing, design work, promotion work, building websites work, SEO work, writing work. If you don't know much about writing content or SEO I suggest you look into it. There are tons of websites explaining these things. SEO and writing are the most popular and easy to do so I suggest you publish some gig on micro jobs website advertising that.
