How many stamps to put a envelope?

How do I know how many stamps to put on an envelope without weighing it at a post office?

  • I want to mail off something and I don't know how many stamps to put on the envelope according to the weight and don't want to go to the post office to get it weighed. Is there any other way I can tell how many stamps to put on the envelope?

  • Answer:

There's about 6 sheets of copy paper in one ounce; add in the envelope's weight, and call it 4 sheets of paper = 1 oz (39 cents), 10 sheets of paper = 2 oz (39+rate for second ounce cents), etc. you can also get $20 food scales at your local grocery store, which weigh the ounces quite well.

Assuming you live in Australia as your question is on the AU boards. I would measure & weigh the item at home and go to the postage calculator at http://www1.auspost.com.au/pac/ and put in the details there. It comes up fairly accurately.

Yep, develop your psychic powers. Then, no problem.

Buy yourself weighing scales for letters, available from stationers. The Post Office should be able to give you a table of current postage rates -- air mail / surface.

i'm sure if you wanted you could go and get a digital scale. weigh it then go to their website and see postage rates. but that would probably be more difficult than just going to the post office.

It depends on how many sheets of paper you mail. For me, anything over 4 sheets count as 2 ounces. You can't really tell unless you weigh it.
