Is the AMMS(american mall model search) a scam?
-
I signed up and on thursday I went to walk the runway. The people who work there were nice, pretty people too. I got on stage and read my lines and walked the runway. The guy said "beautiful!! beautiful! shes pretty judges check her out" my parents told me he was the only one who told me this. About 45 people tried out at the time and only 12 made it, I made it to the next round as well. Everyone who made it, I agree do have potential. They have been at my mall for about a month and I have seen people walk the runway and take pictures. They now want photos so my mom payed $210 for photos. They said they would give me a Portfolio for paying in full and I never got it but they said they would give it to me when I got the pictures. Todays Friday and Im going later for pictures. So I have to take 30 pictures and have 2 different looks. Then on saturday I come back again with my designed Tshirt and have a talent as well. I really want to be a model and I know based what they wrote on my score card that they like me think I have "star potential, best dressed, beautiful, etc." But my mom looked it up online and all she can find is that its a scam and I don't really believe her, based on my experience with them so far. Do you think they are a scam? Anyone ever tried out there?

Answer:
do some research online yourself. I searched on "American Mall Model Search" and found some people who are asking if anyone has been scammed by these people, so others have had the same questions. in general, a modeling agency will have an office in your city, and will be able to get you work soon. having a portfolio of good photos is necessary to getting modeling jobs, but you want to make sure that these people are going to do more than take photos and put them in a book. ask them what local jobs they've been able to get -- they should be involved in hiring models for local advertising agencies, department store fashion shows, any local designers who have shows, and convention events -- things where the client needs someone to do the Vanna White thing (to be attractive and stand next to something.) so the main question for you to ask them is what they are going to do for you once you have your $210 photos. if the answer is not "send you on go-sees and find work for you" then they're not any real help -- they're just selling photos.

There is no such thing as a "talent" competition or "reading lines" in a legitimate modeling competition. And WHY did you pay for pictures before you even had an agency? You don't ever pay portfolio pictures for a model search - your portfolio is shot AFTER you have a contract with an agency, not when you are trying to find an agent. You just wasted money, because if you do get an agent out of this, they are going to make you start over and do additional test shoots for your porfolio because they weren't involved in your initial shoot. Plus 30 pictures is ridiculous. You NEVER have more than 3-4 pictures from the same photographer in a modeling portfolio, and don't need more than 8-12 pictures total if you don't have any professional paid work in your book. I don't know that specific search but from all the info you gave it doesn't sound very legit. Most mall model searches are nothng but scams to take your money. These type of searches often charge more money as you move on to semi-final and final rounds. Does everyone else in the search look like they could be a model - at least 5'7", thin and gorgeous? If not, then you know this is not a legitimate model search, especially if they allow any short, fat or unattractive girls into it. Legitimate model searches like Elite Model Look, Ford Supermodel of the World, Roxy Model Search, Seventeen Magazine Model search, Miss Hawaiian Tropic Model search, etc don't cost anything and certainly don't make you pay for photography.
