Can FedEx delivery be early if it's in your city?

Why do FedEx not deliver packages if they already have them?

I really can't stand FedEx. Quite often I'll track a package and notice it's in my city/on the delivery truck a few days before the ETA, and yet it never arrives early. The other day I was at work and signing for a package...the delivery guy was like I have another package for you in my truck that I'm not supposed to deliver until 3 days from now if you want it (he was nice enough to go back and get it for me). Anyways, what the heck is that about? UPS delivers early if the package arrives ahead of schedule - so what the f#ck is FedEx's problem? I understand if it's something like an iPad that hasn't "come out" yet - but I'm talking a sweater from granny kind of thing here... Urg!!!!!
