How do I obtain a work permit in Washington state?

How do I get a minor work permit in Washington state age 17?

  • I cannot figure out what I am required to do to get a work permit here. I'm on summer break and can't get paperwork from my school; really confused here. Thanks.

  • Answer:

The employer will have a copy of th Parent/School Authorization paperwork. Since it is summer, only your parent needs to fill it out. Once school starts, you will need to have the school fill out the rest of the form. Make sure your parent dates the paperwork so that it shows it was signed during the summer. When you turn 18, you will no longer need a minor work permit. Good luck!

What you need is called a Parent/School Authorization, and you would normally get it from your school. Even though it is the summer, the school's office is probably open. The principals and the secretaries work 12 months. If you can't get it that way, you can get the form from the Department of Labor and Industry's Web site at www.Lni.wa.gov/forms/pdf/700002af.pdf But trust me, it's better to do this through your school, if you can. A "Minor Work Permit" is something the employer has to have, not you. It lets the employer hire people under the age of 18. So, look for the Authorization form instead. Good luck!!
