Which California region costs more to live in for middle class? Bay Area or Los Angeles County?
-
I don't plan on moving to either SF Bay Area or LA County for a while, not until at least I have a plan. But I was wondering for those live in either areas, which area costs more to live in? I understand that both San Francisco and Los Angeles have rich and poor areas around them. East Oakland is bad and many cities east of the 405 are bad. And I know if you want to live in Marin County or Pacific Palisades, you'll need a lot of money! Let's say you're working a decent job making 50-60K a year. In general, will it cost more to live in the San Francisco Bay Area, or Los Angeles County? From an outsider's perspective, I would think that Los Angeles would cost more. Simply because a car is an almost-necessity in the area, the cost of having one will increase the cost of living. But I could be wrong.

Answer:
When you factor in a car and gas because you are always stuck on some freeway in LA, I would say LA is higher. There is another factor to consider. That is time. In LA you are going to spend a lot more time commuting (unless you happen to luck out and live near your job). How much is several hours a day worth to you? Considering that factor I believe San Francisco is a lot more attractive.

You bring up a good point. A car is a huge expense. Car payment, insurance, gas............parking is expensive in the bay area as well. I know people without cars in the bay area and don't seem incredibility inconvenienced. Other than rent and car, cost of living is about the same. If you are not into drinking and partying $50 to $60k a year goes a long way in either cities.

Unless you live in the city of San Francisco, you need a car in the greater Bay Area.
