Working for any small business will give you great experience since they will have a section for AP/AR (Accounts Payable/Accounts Receivable). Working the cash register will give you basic skills, and honestly at this point in time I would take any job! Being able to balance a cash register looks good on a resume as a basic skill, and measure of honesty for sure. If you start doing that and work hard I'm sure the manager/owner wouldn't mind you helping with AP/AR. Some of them want you to work there a while to work your way up since this usually is a full time position but, I would ask about the possibility after working there for about 6 months. They may have 'collection calls' you could make for past due accounts...respectfully propose accounting related tasks you could do, employers usually like this, even if it's not feasible they will appreciate that you took the time to try and improve the business. If this doesn't sound good, keep looking on craigslist and look or customer service/receptionist/file clerk positions. If your not interested in any of these as a starter position you may want to change your major. Good luck, hope this may help! Accounting is not my specialty but I started working in a Deli when I was 14, was a receptionist at a 5 dealership automall for almost 2 years, and just was recently laid off from customer service..I would try and find accountants blogs orr financial advisor's blogs. Good choice of a major for sure though, they will for sure be in high demand in the near future!
