How old do you have to be to work at clothing stores?

How old is to old to work in retail clothing stores?

• Or should I say what is age appropriate to work in these places? I notice that many workers are high school kids or early twenties. Is there a limit, I know they prefer younger than 30 around 16 year old to 24 year olds. BtW I'm 26 years old, and got interview by a girl that looks around 16 to 17 years old, no lie. All the other employees working there look like they're under 18 years old. Note that I look young for my age most people think I'm 20 years old. The store I got interview is American Apparel. I'm referring to stores like American Apparel, Express, Gap, H&M, and Nine West shoes. To Nikki, it makes sense that it depends on the store because stores like Macys and Banana Republic have older people, while Aeropostale and gap is more for teenagers.   Generally there is no age limit, its prohibited by law. But if you look around and see 18 year olds, then that's probably age appropriate. Of course when I worked at JC Penny, i was 20 at the time, most of the people there were 16-22, but there were older people too. mid 30's or so. They weren't the manager or anything, just retail sales people like me. But if you're looking for extra income, you could try what I'm doing.
