USPS mailing question?

Quick question about mailing USPS FIRST-CLASS packages?

  • Hi. I am planning to sell a ring on ebay. The ring is a chunky plastic ring, so it's not tiny, but it's still small enough to fit (along with some newspaper or other insulating material) into a mini manila envelope. This will make the envelope bulge out-- ie, not be flat. I'm wondering: on the USPS website, they say that a "large" envelope must still be rectangular in shape, or else it becomes classified as a package (which is more expensive). If my envelope is well within the size constraints of the "large envelope" catalogue but is very fat/bulging in shape, does this qualift as "non-rectangular?" Please do not guess-- only reply if you have experience with this kind of shipping. thanks!

  • Answer:

Your Large envelope must be no thicker than 3/4 of an inch to be considered for a large envelope. Envelopes that are thicker will be considered a package and can be still sent First Class and although it will cost more to send, it won't be that much more, maybe 50~75 cents more depending on the weight. Dimension Minimum* Maximum Height 6-1/8 inches 12 inches Length 11-1/2 inches 15 inches Thickness 1/4 inch 3/4 inch * Large envelopes exceed at least one of these dimensions. For example, an envelope 10 long x 8 inches high x 1/4 inch thick is considered a large envelope because it exceeds the minimum height dimension. Large envelopes that are rigid, nonrectangular, or not uniformly thick pay package prices. For large envelopes, length is the longest dimension. For larger items, see package prices. Other answers

you can place it in a manila envelope and as long as it's packaged properly, we're only going by the weight. It shouldn't be that heavy and at this point, it would be considered a small parcel.
