Is becoming a paramedic a good job?

FDNY EMT/Paramedic questions?

• I'm looking into becoming an emt or paramedic for the FDNY. I was just wondering what is it like because i keep hearing that it is a bad place to work...whats bad about it besides the low pay? Is it dangerous? what could happen? Anything you can tell me about working in the city would be great. Is the job worth it? Thanks! Also, one question about driving the ambulance...How do the drivers know where they are going, i mean is there a gps or something? I live on long island and have never even driven in the city before.

  It seems that BOO has completely misunderstood the question. I do not work for the fire department directly, however I Do work in New York City in the 911 system. and my significant other works for the FDNY EMS there are several issues with working in FDNY EMS command. Point blank, the pay sucks unless you are one of their "elite" rescue medics. The benefits are good. Their standards for employment, compared to some other agencies are low. Quite simply put, they don't attract the best in the business because they simply can't afford to pay them. their scope of practice is limited to emergencies only, whereas some of the more prestigious services offer the opportunity to challenge their skills with critical care transport. Their schedule is rather unforgiving and as a new person you can be mandated (forced to work overtime) up to five times a week.(rare, but i've seen it happen) but usually no more than twice a week. As an EMS provider in NYC I can tell you that it is truly a front row ticket to the greatest show on the face of the earth. things you should know. you need a drivers license and at least an NYS EMT certification BEFORE you get hired. clean criminal record and you must be in reasonable shape.
