What jobs in New York are well paid?

I'm from England but would love to move to New York when I finish University. I love the idea of life in New York and I am really interested in living there when I'm older. I need an idea about a career that would make me successful in New York. I'm really good at Maths and History and the sciences as well. Any suggestions that require me to be quite academic. I was wondering what career should I head for to be successful. I also need to get an idea of the salary. I know we should say that money isn't everything and it isn't but this is New York we're talking about! I'm obviously gonna need a pretty good salary eventually for the life I want. It's not about the entry salary but the potential salary. I don't really want to go into a career field knowing that my job can never go anywhere and there is no chance of promotion. I don't want any discouraging comments or any answers that tell me to do porn or become a prostitute even if they are serious suggestions, that's just not what I want to do.
