What are some volunteer opportunities in the bay area?

Volunteer opportunities in the NYC area?!?

  • Hi I'm a 16 year old girl and I'd like to volunteer for a cause or anything really. I'm open minded and up for anything. I'm looking for a good place to volunteer in manhattan. Community service hours would be awesome. So Does anyone know of a place to volunteer (that they've preferably Volunteered at and can share their experience) or if someone needs a volunteer? Soup kitchen, animal shelter, senior home, hospital, daycare, etc

  • Answer:

There are many places you can volunteer in Manhattan. Hospitals, Non-Profit organizations, etc. If you want a good place to volunteer and gain work experience, try volunteering in a hospital. They have a range of opportunities such as office work, direct patient care, etc. Here are at least three hospitals that I know that offer volunteer work. Presbyterian Hospitals - http://nyp.org/volunteer/ St. Luke-Roosevelt Hospitals - http://www.wehealny.org/services/slr_volunteer/index.asp Memorial SLoan Kettering - http://www.mskcc.org/mskcc/html/1288.cfm Note: The application process may vary with each hospital. But here is an example for Presbyteiran Hospital. For Presbyterian Hospital, the process of voluntering takes about a month or two depending if the year is ending. 1. Apply online or by paper and mail it. 2. In about a week or two, a mail will be sent giving you the date of the interview. If you haven't received one, call and ask for one (be persistent to get things moving). 3. On the date of the interview, you will be asked simple questions like why you want to volunteer and which volunteer work are you looking for. It's really easy stuff so don't worry. Chances are you will be accepted automatically. Just show interest. 4. A 3 hour orientation and a second interview with the department you want to volunteer in will be scheduled. 5. A physical examination will be scheduled (make sure you're on time) and you don't have to worry about paying or having medical insurance because Presbyteian Hospital will do it for free. Other hospitals may not give one. 6. After you're done with the physical examination, orientation, and second interview, you're ready to volunteer. If you want to try other volunteer organizations, try googling "volunteer work in nyc". Good luck and have fun.

Do you have a work permit? You still need one to volunteer in New York State. I would try the WCS/Bronx Zoo but most of their programs are 18 and older.
