How risky is it to move to New York City without any internships lined up in fashion?
-
I am a future graduate from The Art Institute of Ca in San Francisco with a bachelors degree in fashion design. (will graduate in March) I know I want to be in New York & I want it more than anything. My plan is to do a few internships back to back in New York for 6 months before actually looking for a job to get experience. I would need to find an apt & roommates--the whole deal, of course. I will be financially covered during this time. Would it be a bad idea to move there first that way I can go to as many interviews as possible & be flexible?

Answer:
It is a bit risky, since Fashion is a really competitive field, especially in NYC. I am a graphic design major in NYC and just got an internship. I found the company through an internship fair at my school. Try and find a similar event in the city, or see if the career services dept at your school can help you out. It is always better to have a plan. Try contacting some companies you'd like to intern for. Send resumes and work samples. If you don't hear back before you leave, then go visit them in person when you get here. If you are a persistent, independent, and competitive person then you will be able to find something, but most likely not immediately. Also browse apartments beforehand. It isn't easy finding them and they are pricey. Perhaps plan a trip to the city for a week or so before making the big move. Good luck!

It's a pretty risky move as fashion related positions in New York City are very competitive. Most people don't accept walk-in interviews at all. It's great that you're interested in fashion design!
