I work in a salaried, 40hr work week Job can they force us to swipe a card that tracks bldg...?

...entry/exit for time tracking So basically I work at a company where every employee is a salaried employee (40hr work week). Recently management decided to put a magnetic card swipe at the entrance to the building. They told us that we were now going to have to swipe the card to gain access to the building. That is fine, I can understand them doing that for security. Now, however that was revised, and we are now told that we have to swipe this card whenever we enter or leave the building, and if we don't it's a $100 fine (to which none of the employees even agreed on with ownership). So I was curious if this is even legal? Since they are doing it to track our time...

Answer:
They can do what ever they want. You don't have work there but if you want to keep your job.... I guess you'll have to do it. People have been punching IN and Out for all of time...well not all of time but you get what I mean. It's the same thing. I have a building pass-have since 9/11. We don't need it to get out but do need it to get in. Yes they can see which hallways we use and every time we go through a door. I'm still here. We even have finger print scanner on our computers.....it's just how it is now. I like my job. I do it. Plain and simple. You could try to fight it but I don't know how long you would keep your job. Sorry.

If you play by the rules, you have nothing to fear. If you were the employer, knowing how people are today, would you not want a 'tool' to help you know what is happening within your company?

That doesn't sound right at all. We have a card swipe, I know that if I forget my card, one of my co-workers will let me in. That happens all the time with everyone. We don't have to swipe out, the point of swiping in is for security. The point of swiping out is that the company is using it as an unofficial time card. The $100 fine is a threat because they know that not everyone will swipe in or out. Salaried personnel can be made to submit a time card, but I think that the fee is bogus.

Of course they can force you swipe a card as is their company rules. If you feel it is wrong, then you have the option to complain to have it change or leave. Also, EMS does not have to be in the building looking for you in an emergency.

You only have to do this if you wish to continue to work there! Next!
