When should I start my community service for high school?

I'm a high school student (junior) in NYC looking for community service opportunities. Where do I start?

  Libraries are a good possibility. Churches and synagogues too. If you're good with small children, you may try at a local daycare center or pre-school. Also, some elementary schools welcome back their former students to read to the children, assuming you can get there before they let out for the day. Other possibilities include a senior citizen center or housing complex, a local park or recreation center, a center that provides food for those who don't have much money, a local hospital, or a local museum. In short, there are plenty of opportunities. You may also want to speak to someone in a higher grade who had to do the same community service, and see what they did.
