How to be a nurse in NYC?

I'm an RN (ADN) and I would like to start a visiting nurse agency in NYC..how can I get started?

• I would like to start my own business, here in NYC, where I live. I have AWESOME business skills, organization, and GREAT budgeting abilities. However, I know it can't be that simple. How would one go about opening a TINY company/business/agency that hires and places visiting nurses? My idea is to have 10-50 nurses working for my business (so it will be small) and hire them out to seniors, disabled, etc. who may need weekly visits and find it more affordable and convenient than hospital visits. Please help!

  Do you realize how big a goal you have? There is a HUGE difference between being an RN and owning and running the day to day of an AGENCY. Do you have enough to float the payrolls? 10-50 nurses is not TINY E.g., 50 nurses will cost you hundreds of thousands per month to meet payroll- going out the door. You will need SALES, ACCOUNTING, RECRUITING, PAYROLL, INSURANCES, ETC. It is doable but far from simple. Read The E-Myth - Gerber before you do anything! Great book for you- trust me. Hire a consultant who has RUN such a business- this is a GREAT idea Take business classes and read all the NOLO books on business. Work with that experienced Nurse Agency Consultant and make a professional BUSINESS PLAN (needed if you want to get financing anyway and an absolutely necessary step). As part of this plan, write out all the steps that would be necessary, e.g., Licensing, Insurance, etc. You will quickly see just how big your idea is to implement. FYI- 2/3 of all new businesses fail in the first year- nearly 95% of those that made it are gone within 5 years.
