How much does it take to start a cafe?

I want to open a bakery/cafe in the NY/NJ area?

  • I am a college grad and I want to know what I need to do start a cafe/bakery (cookies, cakes, pastry) in the New York/New Jersey area. What are the regulations and how much money would I need to start this business? What do I need to do and do I need any special degree or license? How long does it take to start it up? Can I bake the cookies and sell it online? If I have an online bakery, can I bake the goods at my house?

  • Answer:

// What do I need to do and do I need any special degree or license? you will need 3 licenses 1) a personal food prep certification 2) business license 3) NY health dep license //How long does it take to start it up? about 4-6 weeks for a retail shop, approx 3 months for bakery (no retail space) // Can I bake the cookies and sell it online? yes but only with the proper licenses //If I have an online bakery, can I bake the goods at my house? NO!!! NYC health code prohibits home cooked/baked goods be sold to the public

Other answers

You would need a business permit, no special degree. It would take a few months. you can sell online, but it would be harder to get started up.
