How can I join the FDNY?

Becoming a future firefighter?

  • I want to become a firefighter on day, as well as a paramedic. I plan to enter the military after college, get experience as a firefighter, and then join the FDNY. I need help. I need information. What should I study in college? Do all firefighters have to use the ladders, or can someone stay on the ground or in the building and not have to climb? How do I convince my family (my mother respects firefighters, but she has this crazy idea that I am "too smart" for such a dangerous career.)? Anything else you think I should know, please add it. Thank you.

  • Answer:

The best thing to study in college is fire science. You can either get a 2 or 4 year degree in it. Even if you are a firefighter in the military you will have to go through a state approved fire academy which a lot of them are at community college's. As far as the ladder's yes you will have to climb ladder's no matter what, If you have a fear of height's that is no problem at all the fire instuctor's will help you through it. As far as your mom just sit her down and explain to her that this is what you really want to do in life. The best way to see first hand is look into and fire explorer program's or see if your local FD has a ride along program.
