Does Americorps City Year place you in dangerous areas?
-
so I know City Year places you in poor inner-city schools. My immediate thoughts upon hearing this was that those schools might be in dangerous areas and honestly, I'm not brave enough to do that for a full year. But when I looked online for info on City Year and dangerous locations they may place people, nothing came up. I feel like if it was really a problem, people would be writing on it so it made me wonder if no one writes about it because they've just accepted it as part of the job or if it's because I was wrong and City Year tries to target areas that although may be poor, have fairly low crime rates. On the other hand, I feel like if it wasn't a problem City Year would point out that they don't place people in unsafe areas (because I'm sure they know people have those questions) and I have not found that either so it makes me wonder if they are trying to be hush-hush to attract more people. I know every place is going to have a crime rate but I'm talking about the kind of places people warn against. What does everyone think?

Answer:
That's a great question. As a recent alum of City Year (who served on the East Side of San Jose) I can say that I never really felt in danger at school or in the neighborhood I served in. The corps receives training around basic safety tips, such as always traveling in pairs and groups, and to be aware of our surroundings (good advice for anyone living or working in urban areas). I also received an incredibly useful gang training in San Jose that helped me not only feel more aware, but made me better understand the struggles my students were dealing with. I would stress that in many cases, the uniform is an easily recognized symbol of our involvement in the community, and because we’ve been established for many years in a lot of the areas we serve in, corps members are often embraced and supported, not seen as targets in any way. The reality of all of this is that danger in many environments do exist, and that's why our corps members are serving... to address many of the issues that underlie our communities’ and nation’s challenges, starting with education.
