  How long it takes for approval varies depending on how you apply (online or by mail), what your criminal background is like and sometime even your name but it's usually between two to ten business days if you apply online and between two to six weeks if you apply by mail. If you apply online after completing the course online or in-person through a licensed BSIS (Bureau of Security and Investigative Services) training school like The National Security Enforcement Training Center http://www.nsetc.com you will submit your information/application through the states online application site: http://www.bsis.ca.gov/online_services/online_licensing.shtml there you will enter all your application information digitally and submit it with a $50 application/permit fee. Once the state gets paid and they reviews your live scan results they will approve your application online at first with 2-10 business days after applying if there are no criminal background issues or name confusions. Sometime your name can hold up the process for example if your name was John Smith there is a high probability that there is some else out there with your name and may even have a negative criminal background which can be confused with your good name.
