How much should I charge for magazine ad space?

Where Can We Post a Free Ad for Renting Office Space for Casting and Editing?

  • My producer thinks we can post a free ad somewhere besides Craigslist, like Recycler or Hollywood Reporter. I think Hollywood Reporter charges, don't they? We are a production office, renting a 125-sq. ft. office (as a sublease) for casting and also as a Final Cut Pro editing suite. I'm doing research now to see how much others charge for that, but so far all I've gotten are a bunch of Craigslist ads. Is there any other website that can list these? We're in Santa Monica; how much do you think we should charge per hour, and how much weekly? There are two categories, remember: for casting and for editing. Someone in the business says we should charge $80/hour for casting. Is that too much?

  • Answer:

There's no such thing as free. If you find a 'free' web site, it's going to cost you in pop up ads. Personally I think that is tacky. Pay for a decent ad so you don't give the appearance of fly by night. If you don't have some idea of how much to charge, stop now. You are not ready to go into business. Remember, you can always adjust down, but it's hard to adjust up.

Marketing means that you want to be IN FRONT of your customers SEVEN TIMES. That means that you want posters in restaurants and bars, where musicians play. You want posters can business cards in every music store and place that does Music lessons. You want posters in every location in the area, where you can put them up.... grocery stores, banks, libraries... everywhere. Then you want Bumper stickers on every car. Go to places where musicians are PLAYING and give them your card. Meet these people face to face. You gotta BE THERE. Hook up with modeling agencies, pageants, dance studios... everywhere. But on-line - YIKES, I don't see how potential customers in India or Africa can use your facility.. it's just not that practical. So stick with your local website ads if they are FREE. But don't expect much... there is an DOT COM bust that is still preventing the automatic marketing that people in the 1990s had hopes for.
