Summer Jobs for a 13 year old in California?

You need to be 14 to get a work permit, employers don't like to hire teens without permits! http://www.cde.ca.gov/ci/ct/we/wpfaq.asp You need to be older (usually 16) to even be a junior counselor at all the camps I know of. And junior counselors don't usually get paid. Sometimes at 14 you can get jobs teaching swimming at clubs, but right now, there are so many people looking for jobs that the employers will go with someone older. What can you do well? My 14 year old son's karate instructor is only 3 years older than he is and she has been teaching him since she was 14. She's really good and had been studying at the studio for years, so they hired her. If you are involved with some activity like that, usually that's a good way to go. Like instrument lessons for little kids, tutoring, etc. I know you said no babysitting, but that's all there is, really, or doing chores, etc. My son has been entertaining a younger kid so his mom can get work done. His mom is there in the home, my son plays video games, and now tutors, the kid. Good luck!!

I saw an ad in a pennysaver for the California Youth Corps. I threw it away though so I don't know anything about it and can't find much info online. Look into the US Forest Service, I think they have programs for students, also check out California Conservation Corps, anything in the public sector. There might be avenues open for younger kids. I know juvenile hall kids get to be on fire crews and get paid (not that much, below minimum wage and they get time off their sentence).
