What are the requirements for teaching informal arts/crafts classes to children in my home, or the local park?
-
I want to start a local art class with the kids in the neighborhood/school, where we can get together once a week to learn a craft. I wanted to know if for something informal like that, (like an art club), if i need the same requirements as an art teacher in a school. How do those centers work, like at Michaels, or the pottery stores, where the kids come in and learn? I'm not sure, but it doesn't seem that those people are accredited in any way. Any help or info is much appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:
If you're good at arts & crafts, probably the biggest concerns would be business issues like taxes, insurance, renting a table at a park, finding customers, etc. I doubt you need to be certified as a teacher, it's sort of like being a tutor, and many tutors are students. (For some things, like teaching scuba diving, one would have to be a certified instructor.) You might want to see about teaching a class through a community center, after school program, or community college no-credit class. Here is an example of an community college extended learning catalog: http://pasadena.augusoft.net/index.cfm?fuseaction=1010 http://pcclearn.org/ I would look at all resources to see if something similar is offered, so you know what the competition is. = ) Maybe http://www.craigslist.com (I found my son 2 amazing voice teachers on craigslist.), mom's websites like http://www.theorangecat.org/, local online newspapers. Also, once your up and running, you might see if you can put a flyer at schools or teach at a school. At my son's private K - 8 they have private parties teach classes after school. Large companies like Science Adventures: http://www.klcschoolpartnerships.com/main/do/Students_and_Parents_Science_Adventures and smaller companies that teach chess, ballet, Mandarin, etc. Good luck!
