How is the life in Houston, TX for a working family?
-
Hello, my wife and I living in Toronto, Canada for the last 5 years, but we are planning to move this summer to Houston, TX. Canada is a nice country, but the winter is really bad. My wife is Puerto Rican (American Citizen) I have a Green Card. My wife is administrative assistant (she is working now in Toronto). I am mechanical drafter/designer (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor) (I am working now in Toronto). How is the employment situation in Houston? How is the life in Houston (health, school, crime)? Is there engineering and/or manufacturing companies? Thanks,

Answer:
I've lived in Houston for my whole life & I love it. depending on which area you're living in, there is little crime. most safe neighborhoods have police around & if you have kids its a pretty safe environment. health wise, houston is pretty good. people think a lot of people got the swine flu since houston is right above mexico but not many people I know caught it. schools are great down here. if you're looking for private schools there are various choices but some of the public schools aren't that great.. again it depends on which area you're living in. but not all the public schools are bad just a few are. you can search online for additional information It might be hard for you and you're family to a just to the weather. Houston is as I like to call it 'bi-polar'. it gets insanely hot & humid in the summer and in the winter it got so cold that it started snowing! there was also a hurricane this year. in some weeks, you get all seasons in one week. one day it may be hot, the next cold, the next humid, and the next sunny & bright so you should be prepared. If you have kids, there is plenty to do in houston. there are various malls such as Memorial City, the Galleria, Katy Mills Mall and much more. there are also a lot of boutiques as well as parks. its also fun to drive around once in a while, say for a long weekend? you can take a drive to san antonio where theres the Alamo, ripley's believe it or not & the wax museum or to galveston to go to schlitterbahn (a water park) or just to the beach.. which i don't really recommend because it isn't the cleanest beach around There is also wonderful food that you can find anywhere. Hope you have fun in Houston & love it as much as I do!

Life is very good here , There is plenty of work, I live in Katy which is on the northwest side of Houston and its a beautiful community..My wife is a designer (civil engineering) and she didn't have any problem getting a job here. I am a Construction Superintendent and am currently running 45 houses here in Houston. There are plenty of Engineering and Manufacturing companies and Housing here is very affordable. You can get a nice 4bed house in a good neighborhood for around 140k. It rains here alot but the weather is not too bad at all...I think you will enjoy it here..

I wasn't born in Texas but I got here as soon as I could. I've been here more than 30 years, I currently live in Richmond, Texas, and I've seen it boom and bust. That being said things have been going well here since the mid 80's. Houston and the surrounding areas are, for the most part, business friendly which means jobs. We don't have much of a winter, fall or spring. We are noted for our summers. Art failed to mention they are hot. How hot you ask? It is so hot I've seen trees spontaneously combust, fortunately the humidity is so high the flames are quickly quenched. It's now 1:30 PM and the temperature is 84F with humidity at 66%. Monday we are expecting 90F. As for employment look up the Houston Chronicle on-line. As is typical the best jobs are not listed but you will get a good idea of what is available.

Houston is a convenient place to live and the economy isn't as bad off as other parts of the US but crime has always been a problem, gangs are rampant as well as drug use, Houston has had the highest percentage of uninsured people as far as health insurance goes and also the highest incident of antibiotic resistant diseases probably due to the wide spread practice of hoarding antibiotics rather than taking the full course. The schools have been subjected to the republican rewrite of history that the state of Texas has been doing to favour concepts such as creationism and to divert attention away from minority history, I've been apalled at the literacy levels that I've encountered here. The schools tend to focus on getting the kids onto ritalin even though teachers are clearly not qualified to medicate children. The public transit system is an expensive joke compared to other cities and the culture is such that many opposes public transit on the belief that poor people and criminals use public transit. There is much going for Houston but trust me, there will be a culture shock as well as a values shock for people accustomed to Canada. You can make a good life in Houston but be prepared, it is very different from Toronto. With a large number of qualified people soon to loose their jobs from NASA and with Continental's relocation to Chicago, you may want to make sure you have a position for you before moving to Houston, there's likely to be a fair bit of competition in the near future.
