IS THIS A LEGITIMATE MODELING AGENCY?

Anyone know a legitimate modeling agency in the Detroit area?

  • I'm thinking about becoming a model, but I don't want to spend $1000 to get a portfolio done. I'm willing to do time-for-print modeling to get started. I am male, 16, 6' 1". I don't know much about modeling, but when I was visiting family in Florida this summer, I was approached by a scout and asked if I would like to do some modeling, so I guess I have some talent, I just don't really know how to find a legitimate modeling agency in the sea of scams. Also, I saw this website called "Model Mayhem," which is apparently like a craigslist for models, can anyone vouch for it? I want to sign up, but I don't have the photos required to. PS Any other advice you can provide is much appreciated!

You are right to be suspicious. Any place that talks *first* about the classes they want you to take and the portfolio they want you to get (from THEM, or course, or their affiliate) is almost certainly a scam. To get an idea of how a legitimate agency works, check out the Web site for Wilhemina Models, one of the big NYC agencies. Of course, you are a male, and as far as I know they only represent women, but it is worth a look, so that you can compare a legitimate operation with the agencies you investigate. They don't need (or even prefer) professional photographs. They are just looking for someone who has what it takes. http://www.wilhelmina.com/aboutus_now.cfm http://www.wilhelmina.com/become_model_overview.cfm I do have two places for you to check out in Detroit. I am *not* a model or anyone who hires models, so I can't personally vouch for either of these. But I have heard that they are legit, so they are places to start The Talent Shop http://www.thetalentshop.com and The I Group http://www.theigroup.com And as a matter of general principle, I cannot believe that a legitimate agency would advertise in Craigslist. If they have real contacts in the industry, wouldn't they be able to pay for an ad in a medium that isn't quite so sketchy?

Model Mayhem is a great site. My husband is a photogrpher and he uses this site regularly. IT IS NOT LIKE CRAIGS LIST. Models and photographers can leave feedback for one another. There are individuals who will do time-for-print and it is a really reasonable way to start. Since you are a minor it would be wise to take a chaperone to your shoots.
