Looking for a job in Cleveland, Ohio. Marketing/advertising... sales/PR?

You are the head of a large succsesfull marketing firm in Cleveland Ohio called, say Liggett Stashower. Are you going to hire the guy who answered your ad in the Plain Dealer or your vice presidents nephew who has the same credentials? The thing is this. Unless your grades really make you stand out my guess is that the nephew gets the job before you. Everyone is nice. Everyone went to school, but the nephew is most likely to work hard to impress or make up to his uncle. The uncle is happy because you helped his nephew out. So it goes for 80% of jobs. 100% of non public jobs. So YOU need to make contacts. Talk to friends. Call your uncles and use connections. I never used any of my family or friends for any work until a couple of years ago as a matter of principle. I now know that this was foolish. I have created more business (and money) in the last two years than the previous 5 combined. What was I waiting for? You should and must use who you know beacause it is how th real world works. You will do the same thing when you are an ad executive some day. T

Well, I feel for you. 15 years ago, I was you. My advice is to strongly consider leaving Cleveland. Personally, I think it's a great place. Economy and career wise, it's death. Not a good place at all for a college grad. At least consider Columbus, but more so even out of state. I am in Phoenix and very involved in the PRSA chapter. Check out the PRSA chapters in other cities, look at their job boards.

It is always best to look in the free paper the un employment paper that way you can see the recent jobs that are avaiable for you and ih your field well it work for me and my niece.
