How do I start my catering company?

I want to Start a home based catering company in chicago, where do I begin? step by step process, please help!?

  • I have been doing a little research online and asking some friends who have similar companies, but i really don't know where to begin. I also want to know if it's better to apply for grants before applying for licenses and permits. I want to start out of my home and maybe rent a kitchen. I am so stumped! need any advice.

    It would be best to apply for grants first as they will take a while to be approved and for you to receive the monies.Then, as you are waiting for the grant money do apply for the licenses and permits. My advice to you is to begin at home and as your business grows rent a kitchen. Good Luck.

I suggest you read today's Chicago Tribune about some small businesses using group kitchens that had their food destroyed by the city for preparing and freezing food for future use before receiving their licensing. I believe the figure used for applying for this license was $800. Of course, other licenses and permits are needed. Stick strictly to the local laws. (Sat. 2/6/10)
