A career in magazines or publishing?

A career in book publishing...in Illinois?

I have already checked out Sourcebooks in Naperville, IL and have applied for internships and career opportunities there. I have also been to Tyndale Publishing in Carol Stream. I want to publish novels not textbooks or magazines. A lot of my googled/yahooed results bring up scholastic publishers. That's not where I want to be. Maybe you are a writer who has been published and you like your particular company? I am aware that the major publishing houses are in New York, but I was born and raised in Chicago, IL and I don't want to leave. I am an English major with one more year of school left. I will be taking some marketing and publicity courses to help beef up my resume. I want to make sure I have applied to everywhere I could. Any help would be appreciated!
