How can I find an online job that I can start for free?

I have exhausted my job search in Chicago, how can I start to find work in other cities?

  • this is just getting out of control. I need to find a job that fits me and I am not finding it in Chicago. All I am finding are scam jobs on the career websites and no listings in the newspaper. When I try to look on the newspaper websites, they direct me right back to the stupid careerbuilder, monster SCAM jobs. How can I start to find employment in other cities. Whats the normal relocation process for moving to another city? Did the company help you?

  • Answer:

What kind of job are you looking for exactly? I'm a recruiter, and I know for sure there are plenty of jobs in Chicago. However, the Internet is definitely not the best way to find them. If you're more specific with what you're looking for, it's easier to help you...

Since we have no way of knowing what type of job you are looking for, I will take a gentle stab at this. Did you try networking with others in your field. If you are an Engineer, trying connecting with Engineer Professionals, or if the job is for an Administrative Assistant or secretary, check out the local agencies that work with AA's like Office Team, Today's Staffing. Check Craiglist for jobs under the specific job title. If you have extra time on your hands, you could outsource your skills - if you type, think about creating a flyer and handing out at colleges and typing papers for college students, target Chicago State University, Roosevelt University, Columbia College or other colleges close to your area. Check out www.idealist.org for jobs if you are looking for a community based job. Do you have great organizational skills? Then if you have access to the internet, can handle Virtual AA duties, then create an ad and post on Craiglist List and see if others may need a good Virtual Administrative Assistant. For a flat fee this could tie you over. Do you write? Associated Content is always seeking writers and if your writing is great, they will pay you via PayPal. Have you tired getting a head hunter, if there's specific job you are seeking. If you are looking outside of Chicago, remember to ask the company for a relocation fee (if it's a corporate job). Check with local colleges (here) on any upcoming job fairs and attend. Make sure your resume is clear/focused and no longer than 2 pages. Make sure you have your references lined up and they can provide good recommendations for those calling to check the reference. If you considering relocating, remember to include your fees to relocate and target your new location by researching the city and the income you would need to survive living there day by day -- that would be very important in this case. Good luck!

There is no possible way you have exhausted your job search in the city of Chicago. Everything you mention was online. What about the good old fashion way. Put on your Sunday best and hit the streets going door to door. I am an Accountant and I have gotten a job that way, in Louisiana where there really is no jobs. Jobs don't find you. You find them. You have to beat doors down sometimes. Online should be used as a tool, not a source.
