How to get clients to stop micro-managing design?

What should I do: My boss is emotionally abusive?

  • Today during a business trip to a clients house a few minutes from our place of work, my boss and I begin a conversation. A conversation that starts off harmless, but soon turns serious when his reaction to my explanation of my life growing up leads him to call me "White Trash". It doesn't just stop there; The man who holds himself to a high standard and is clear with his opinion of others then explains how I won't amount to much. "Kids who grow up white trash will get comfortable with life when they reach a state that is better than what they had growing up. They will be 'satisfied' with what they have because what they have is much better than what they had before; therefore they stop trying. On the other hand, a kid from a 'normal' family, with a mom that stays home and take care of things there, and a dad who works at a good job, brings home a lot of money and is able to afford the nicer things in life, such as a college education for his children, will grow up always wanted more... They will grow up and strive to be better than what their father was and what he was able to provide for his family." I had a few things I wanted to say in return, but the situation was awkward enough, not to mention he's my boss and in this economy, the likeliness of me finding another job in the design/build construction business isn't very high. I kept my mouth shut. This is the same man who feels the need to announce there is a pool in the office to see how long it will take me to gain my weight back (Lost about 80lbs - long before starting this nightmare) and hides marijuana in his office for a little R&R... What are my options? I'm not sure what to do anymore but I wake every morning in tears and enveloped in anxiety because I know what the day has in store for me... Just driving to work is hard enough with a heaviness in my chest and tears in my eyes as I see the company building approaching...

First of all, you should NEVER let ANYONE talk to you like that! Just because the chips are down in the economy, it doesn't give him the right to say as he pleases....and you shouldn't stand for it! Your mom didn't put you on this earth for some jackaSS to toss around as he pleases. If you're having that kind of anxiety, you should seriously think about leaving anyway. No one needs to work in a toxic environment like that! It isn't healthy and will only cause you problems in the long run. Trust me! Start putting in resumes elsewhere and give yourself a chance to find another place to work. By doing nothing is only making matters worse for you. You need to see the light at the end of the tunnel and right now the power has been shut off. Good Luck!

Wow...just...wow. If it's getting to the point where you have this much anxiety about going to work, then you need to find a new job. I know it's not easy to find a job in this economy, but you don't deserve this treatment. Start shopping resumes around. Hold your head high. Everything's going to turn out okay. In the meantime, if you don't have it already, purchase The Sims 2, make a sim of your boss, and make him get eaten by a carnivorous cow plant or build him a one-room shack surrounded by outdoor toilets. It might make you chuckle a little. :) "hugs"

Not to sound insensitive, but perhaps you're just a little over-sensitive or suffer from anxiety. I would suggest consulting a cognitive behavioral therapist to work on your issues. Waking up every moring to a panic attack is pretty serious. Whether it be for internal or external reasons. Learn to stop looking to pass the blame to others and turn inward on yourself for some self-reflection.
