How does a degree in Fine Arts work?

How can I quickly find a decent paying job in Austin, TX with a Fine Arts degree and little work experience?

  • I worked for two years as a graphic designer in a sign shop until I had to leave and care for a terminal parent, but I only got a limited amount of training there as I was a very part time, pick up the slack guy. I am looking for nearly any kind of job where having a degree will boost the pay a little and where I don't have to break my back or force myself to fake a salesman personality that I don't naturally have. I'm getting desperate though, because I have been searching here for quite a while since I relocated. Something nearer to central or south Austin would be great.

  • Answer:

You'll need to go out and pound the pavement just like the rest of the prospective job seekers. Austin might be one of the few places in Texas where a Fine Arts degree could get you a job, but in the economy today, you need to be flexible and take what is out there.
