Can fish survive without plants?

Can Devil's Ivy plants grow/survive in a tropical fish tank?

  • I actually already know they can survive because I put mines into my huge tropical fish aquarium and its growing beautifully. I think it's getting its nutrients from fish poo and decomposed uneaten fish food. I just want to know If they normally are able to grow or survive underwater? Assuming it gets nutrients( in my case, from fish poo and fish food) Do they drown? And would they pose a danger to tropical fishes? like do they release bad chemicals or other stuff? Thank you.

  • Answer:

They are not tropical water plants. If you have fish that eat plants, that can be dangerous as this plant is poisonous. I am surprised that it is actually growing in the water because this plant should be kept at a temperature around 60-65 degrees F. Also a good rule of thumb is that any plant with white in it is not a true aquarium plant.
