How can I get rid of flies in my house?
-
My neighborhood had a mouse infestation earlier this year and pest control treated the problem. The new problem is, I believe that the dead mice have contributed to an increase in flies, and they're everywhere! I've placed a fly trap outside, but is not designed for indoor use. When I open my front door, flies keep getting in the house, and there's probably close to 20 flies around my home at any given time. Is there a good way of getting rid of them without using chemicals? I have two very small dogs (5 and 3 lbs) and I need to think of their safety. I suppose I could put fly paper around the house, or just chase them with a swatter. Does anyone have any other ideas? Is there a natural fly repellent I could use to keep them from wanting to come in?

Answer:
THe flies are just temporary depending of the size and quantities of the cadaver(s). A couple of good sized rats will take a couple of weeks to be eaten and decompose. I went through this once when my only recourse was to leave bait in the crawl spaces. Some of th varmits died in the walls... Phew.. the huge blowflies were awful and there were two batches of them. I hung adhesive fly strips in the basement rooms and locked the doors. There were soooooo many flies that the strips were moving in circles ..and the buzzing !! But it goes away and then it is just a vaccum job for the dead flies.

Sweep up all the dead mice. Eliminate any food sources that may be attracting rodents. Hose out all garbage cans to remove maggots and dump a cup of Pine-Sol into each garbage can to repel flies. Make sure the lids fit tight. Install screens in all windows and add storm doors with screens if necessary. Train children to keep doors closed.

Best and safest thing is fly paper. Maybe a bug Zapper close to your front door so they die before they enter
Gloves hanging on the door will repel them. A fan blowing on the door will keep them from coming in. Hanging plastic baggies half filled with water so the natural light will show through them will repel the flies.
