Which freezer bag works best?

  • I'm trying to be smarter about cooking and eating and I've tried to start freezing meals, bulk meat, veggies etc. The problem is it seems no matter what I use I still get ice crystals on my food. Is this normal? Please do not make fun of me I'm the absolute opposite of a domestic goddess and am really trying to learn, Can anyone tell me if ice crystals are normal? Because the commercials on TV don't have them! Also can you recommend a good brand of freezer bags or containers? One last question, I want to prepare sugar cookie dough for Christmas ahead of time and freeze it. I've never done this before... any tips? Thanks!

    The Hefty and Ziploc bags are good bags to use. Rubbermaid bowls have good sealing lids and are good to use. It is normal to have some frost on the food.

I prefer the Glad freezer bags, but Zip Loc works also. The cheap bags can leak. And yes, it is normal for frozen food to have some ice crystals on it. The longer an item is in the freezer the more ice crystals there are. If you make and freeze sugar cookie dough, I would leave the dough in a disk or a ball and wrap it tightly in a couple of layers of plastic wrap and then place in the freezer bag.

I agree with Anna, but after blanching vegetables for at least one minute shake and strain off as much water as you can and allow to cool properly, squeezing as much air out of the bag as possible so that the bag does not appear bloated.
