How often should I run a dehumidifier?

Is there a huge difference electricity cost to run a 200w or a 275w dehumidifier?

  • I want to buy a dehumidifier and I've narrowed it down to 2 One uses 200w of electricity and the other uses 275w Obviously the 275w will be more expensive to run but can anyone tell me roughly in pence per hour how much more? Money is tight right now (guess I'm not alone!!!!!) but my condensation problem is really bad. The 275w is a much better machine and more expensive (I'm not too worried about the initial outlay) but if it will cost much more to run daily then I need to think about it. Any help greatly appreciated, thanks

  • Answer:

It would be about 1p per hour extra as the 200w dehumidifer would cost about 2.5p per hour to run and the other one would be about 3.5p per hour. doesn't sound much but if they are on for say 12 hours a day that's 12pence extra a day, £3.60 extra a month. So total running costs at 12 hours a day for one month would be around £9.00 for the 200w and around £12.60 a month for the 275w version

assuming you'll be running both at full capacity, the difference will be 75w per hour. Your electrical bill probably has a kilowatt hour price on it. Estimate how many hours per day you'll be running this device multiply by 75 and then divide the watts you'll consume by 1,000 to get the kilowatt hours you'll be adding to your bill each day

If money is tight, run the lower watt one. you can figure out yourself how much by knowing what you pay per kilowatt hour. better yet, open some windows, run a simple fan to circulate air. don't really need a dehumidifier.

Depends on what you mean by a huge difference. An average old type light bulb is about 60w so it would be like turning a light on (the difference ) I dont think it would cost very much more to run.

Well, I`ll have a go at this. An extra 75 Watts would take 13 hours or so to use up 1 Kilowatt hour, which are the units we are billed in and cost about 12 pence each. So the additional cost would be just over 1 pence per hour depending on how much your electricity supplier is charging you per unit. Regards, Bob.
