Why is it so hard to kill bed bugs?

Kill bed bugs with heat?

  • I was getting bit about 2 days ago at first I thought it was just a mosquito then I noticed it was only at night...so im pretty sure its bed bugs. So what i did was wash all my clothes and sheets in hot water, vacuumed the cracks and corners, got a bed bug protector from walmart to cover up my mattress and put a portable heater in my room and left it on for an entire day...the heater doesnt tell you how hot it is and i dont have a thermostat..its an old heater but it got pretty hot in there..will this get rid of the bed bugs??? I have a tempurpedic bed..idk if that matters.

hi very quick answer to your question NO and that is a big fat NO there is lots of false information about using hot water and heat to get rid of bedbugs. In fact if you do not use the right temperature especially for washing which is basically boiling point for the whole wash, all you are actually doing is speeding up the breeding process I have a whole website dedicated to treating bedbugs and information on bed bugs feel free to check it out, especially the article on laundry and washing

It won't work because they don't normally nest in beds. They tend to nest behind baseboards or within electrical sockets. You may kill a bug or 2, but you still have their eggs to worry about. The diatomaceous earth treatment WILL work, but you would need to put up with a very dusty house for a month or so. Some people cannot stand it, but I would much rather do that for next to free (DE is available at HD/Lowes) rather than shell out cash on a professional who overcharges.

The heat needs to be 120 degrees. The heater will not work. The bugs hide in the walls and in different places. The eggs are hard to get rid of. The bugs will need to be treated.

Thumbs-up for being proactive! Many people that suspect bed bugs are giving them fits at night will simply move to the couch and even worse, spend the night at a friends or relatives home. This will only exasperate the problem and give this hitch-hiker a free ride to populate elsewhere. Capture a live or dead specimen using scotch-tape to later be properly identified by a pest control professional. You cannot effectively treat for bed bugs if you have mites and vice-versa. Follow their recommended guidelines to the letter. This may include and will not be limited to learning that - Bed mattresses, box-springs and headboards are potential hot zones for sheltering bed bugs. Any mattress connected items, chest of drawers or night tables need to be inspected thoroughly and/or fumigated outside, before bringing into your home. Any soft type furnishings, such as curtains or the valance, will need to be washed and dried at temperatures above 120 degrees Fahrenheit. If possible, you need to maintain these extreme temperature wash and drying cycles for twenty to thirty minutes to kill and get rid of any eggs and nymphs as well as the adults.
