How can i find out who lived in my house before?

  • i am trying to see who lived in my house during historic times.. its a creepy victorian house and about three days ago my cat has been acting really creepy (note: we only just moved in a month ago) and it looks like hes talking to someone or following someone or some times running away and playing now i don't really believe in ghosts but some scary things are happening around here.

Dear Vikki, The cool thing is that every one of these contributors is CORRECT. I have used each of these ways to research properties before offering auction bids for dilapidated properties and prior to purchasing my own homes. I do my own title/abstract searches. Talk with your neighbors. Ask about the previous owners and residents. Ask elders in the town. Most spirits are reportedly friendly. For some reason, pets and children must appear to be less threatening to the spirits. Adults often mention that the pets/children do these things when the adults haven't noticed anything. Adults report they notice the pets or infants following non-existent objects with their eyes, infants/children conversing and laughing for long durations, those children later pointing at a picture of a never mentioned ancestor and calling them by name. If this was a "threatening spirit", you would have known by now. If you're truly unnerved, ask the spirits to show you a sign that they're there. Say you mean them no harm. Be aware of any changes in your surroundings - doors open, closed later, etc. I wouldn't give it a second thought, myself. It could be your cat is just adjusting to his new home, like you! Congratulations on finding a Victorian House! I absolutely love them.

U can research online by typing in the town and reading up, local libraries have records for the town (archives) or you can look up the united state cenus then your town address so forth

When I was in college I took a title searching course and one of our assignments was to provide the publicly recorded information regarding a particular piece of property. This was several years ago. I went to the county recorders office and started with the current trust deed which now should be in their computer records. After you exhaust the computer records you move down to the microfiche files. After that you get into these notebook type books and then leather bound books and that's about where it ends, with the exception of a few special maps. The cool thing was that I was able to trace a piece of urban property on Florida St. all the way back to a Spanish Land Grant in the 1700s. I thought that was some pretty amazing record keeping.

Search Census records.... This will detail everything. They exist for 1841, 51, 61, 71, 81, 91, 1901 & 11 You can pay for access per search, or you can subscribe for a year. Alternatively, just take the 2 weeks free trial normally available form ancestry.com or co.uk and go for it.

To my knowledge, you could find out, how many times the house has been bought and sold over the years. And how much it has been bought and sold for. But as far as names, no i have never heard of anywhere you could get such information.

Going to the county court house and looking in the records will tell you. A clerk there will tell you how to look the record up.
