How can I get rid of house flies?

• Last week I noticed one single fly buzzing around the kitchen. A few days later, there were literally dozens of them. I made a few homemade traps by putting a cone shape tapped over a cup filled with vinegar and fruit. I only caught one fly! Yesterday I invested in some commercial fly-tape traps that I've hung up around the kitchen area. Those have been working much better and I've caught maybe 15 total. There are no dishes or trash bags out or anything I can really see that they're feeding off of, except maybe dog food. I haven't bought an old fashioned fly swatter because I'm kind of girly and I don't like the idea of bug guts being smeared around the apartment. Does anyone know of any other way I can get rid of these pests? They're so annoying! And now I have guests coming over for the weekend and I don't want to be embarrassed. I'm also reluctant to buy poison or bug-sprays, because it IS in an area where I handle food and I also have a dog who's safety I'm concerned about. Suggestions? Preferably something at home, but I'm willing to spend a few bucks. I'm just a college kid and I can't afford pest-control.

  flies can detect the smell of death or rotten food in the air, maybe just maybe, someone or some thing like an animal may have died in your place, how long have you lived there? talk with your landlord to see what the real deal is. It could be your sink drain in your kitchen. pour some bleach down there and some pine sol for more freshness
