How to stop soil erosion?

  • Hi, I own a plot which is right next to a small river which flows non stop through out the year, now in rainy season the river flow and water quantity increases allot causing soil erosion on my land, making a wall will be too expensive, so i was thinking to plant some trees next to it (right now the flow and quantity is very less but in june, july it will increase as hell) so any advise on which tree or plant to grow to control soil erosion. Any other advise on how to control soil erosion caused by the river will be really appreciated.

    The application of clay to make the soil texture finer would reduce the soil erosion and slow down the entry of water downward through the soil profile. Further, grassy vegetation such as vetivar grass which has the unique property of binding the soil particles by prolific root growth, thus preventing soil erosion. Application of vermicompost would enhance the growth and development of vetivar grass. These measures would control soil erosion significantly.

this problem is an age old problem and the only real solution is to build a solid concrete wall. the power which water generates is immense and a harmless little brook can become a raging torrent in hours and cause incredible damage. Solid concrete and lots of it is the only solution. Plants etc will be swept away and matting, loose stones small rocks in wire mesh are equally ineffective. Are there any government grants to cover this problem where you are?

find someone who needs to get rid of a bunch of large rocks. I have a stream running through my property. Letting natural grasses grow has helped keep erosion down. Don't mow up to the water line. My neighbor (down stream) dose this and his yard is always a mess.

I would say plant "Weeping Willow" it will love this kind of site with plenty of water, they grow fast as well.
