How do I get rid of flies?

  • How do I get rid of houseflies and fruitflies? I went away on vacation and had a neighbor feed my cat. Well, she left the old cans of catfood laying around, and when I got home, I had a house full of flies! I can't get rid of them. What can I do?

  • Answer:

This may sound daft to some but so long as the process has started you may do well to allow it to run its course. these are most likely housefly or blowfly that go through a developmental stage that lasts only for a few days. If you have removed the garbage and had a good clean you are rid of the majority of the problem. Some larvae will be hidden in cracks but will develop and appart from wasting time and money there is not too much you can do. Open the windows so that they can fly out during the day, help them along where you can - it's better than spreading insecticides everywhere, but use it if you have to. Keep surfaces clean using antibacterial cleaner. Your results will be just as quick as getting a pest controller in.

Clean your house really good with bleach. All the counters etc. Put bleach in every drain & toilet. Throw away any fruit you have out. They will go away.

CHUCK

Put water in a clear plastic bag, tie it, and hang it from a tree. Try to have more than 1 bag Hope this helps

This sounds gross, but most likely, there are pupae (cocoons) somewhere in the house, that are hatching into winged flies. Fortunately, flies have a very short lifespan, generally just a few days. Make sure there isn't food lying around exposed (even in the trash can), and the flies should abruptly disappear in a week or so, assuming your house is warm. If the house is cold, the pupae could be hibernating, and slow to hatch. This worked for us. Flies are weak, and a flea-bomb will knock them down, but more pupae could hatch the next day. Just be patient, and be glad that it's flies, not ants.
