How do you get rid of flies?

How to get rid of little black flies multiplying in flower pots?

  • I have some small flies in my appartment which I think are living on decomposing material in flowerpots. As far as I am aware they are completely harmless, but they do start to bother me - I don't want to keep fishing them out of drinking glasses and having them be attracted to lamps. Does anybody happen to know what kind of flies I am talking about and how to get rid of them, preferably without using poison. Would yellow glue traps work or putting out liquid traps with dishwashing soap (but what to use as attractant). I can deal with a few of them, but lately it seems to get more than a few and I need to create some kind of "predation" so they don't get out of hand. Thanks for any input

they will be fungus gnats living in the soil...the easiest solution is to use any type of water based insecticide, even diluted in half again and water the plants with this solution to kill the larvae and adults in the soil and on top of the soil...you can also re-pot the plants into clean soil and watch the amount of water you use in the future...there is also a larvalcide called gnatrol you can place on the soil that only kills the the larvae, so it won't be an instant fix, but it is thorough. With anything you do you need to address the larvae in the soil otherwise you will just be continually catching the adults never getting rid of the problem.

We had that problem at work, and what I wound up doing was taking fly paper and popsicle sticks, cutting 2" lengths of fly paper and wrapping it around one end of the popsicle stick, then sticking the other end into the soil in each pot. They climb up the plants and sides of the pots, preferring to walk instead of fly whenever possible, and the sticky...sticks...soon got covered with the little bastards. You can also get some permethrin spray, and spray the pots, soil, and plants, which will kill them and the larvae as they hatch and climb out of the soil.
