What items do you need for a home emergency kit?
-
A kit in case of earthquake, tornado, flood or nuclear war (slight exaggeration) What items would you pack?
-
Answer:
The lists at the link below is really thorough and many people would think it's overkill. However, as Hurricane Katrina showed us, it's far better to be prepared. The only thing that I would probably add would be DVD copies of my photo backups that I do on a regular basis. Photos represent memories and if you were to lose everything but still had digital copies of your photos, there is a little left, if you know what I mean.

For a family I would include. What you have on hand when a disaster happens could make a big difference. Plan to store enough supplies for everyone in your household for at least three days. * Water. Have at least one gallon per person per day. * Food. Pack non-perishable, high-protein items, including energy bars, ready-to-eat soup, peanut butter, etc. Select foods that require no refrigeration, preparation or cooking, and little or no water. * Flashlight. Include extra batteries. * First aid kit. Include a reference guide. * Medications. Don't forget both prescription and non-prescription items. * Battery-operated Weather radio. Include extra batteries. * Tools. Gather a wrench to turn off gas if necessary, a manual can opener, screwdriver, hammer, pliers, knife, duct tape, plastic sheeting, and garbage bags and ties. * Clothing. Provide a change of clothes for everyone, including sturdy shoes and gloves. * Personal Items. Remember eyeglasses or contact lenses and solution; copies of important papers, including identification cards, insurance policies, birth certificates, passports, etc.; and comfort items such as toys and books. * Sanitary supplies. You'll want toilet paper, towelettes, feminine supplies, personal hygiene items, bleach, etc. * Money. Have cash. (ATMs and credit cards won't work if the power is out.) * Contact information. Include a current list of family phone numbers and e-mail addresses, including someone out of the area who may be easier to reach by e-mail if local phone lines are overloaded. * Pet supplies. Include food, water, leash, litter box or plastic bags, tags, medications, and vaccination information. * Map. Consider marking an evacuation route on it from your local area. As far as the first aid kit goes I would include: * Bar of soap * 2-inch roller bandage * 1-inch roller bandage * 1-inch adhesive * 3-by-3-inch sterile pads * Triangular bandage * Assorted gauze pads * Adhesive strips * Clinical oral thermometer * Scissors * Tweezers * Sunburn lotion * Lip salve * Poison-ivy lotion * Small flashlight (with extra batteries and bulb) * Absorbent cotton * Water purification tablets (iodine) * Safety pins * Needles * Paper cups * Foot powder * Instant ice packs * Latex or vinyl gloves, to be used when stopping bleeding or dressing wounds * A mouth-barrier device for rendering rescue breathing or CPR * Plastic goggles or other eye protection to prevent a victim's blood from getting into the rescuer's eyes in the event of serious arterial bleeding * Antiseptic, for sterilizing or cleaning exposed skin area, particularly if there is no soap or water available.

dried foods water meds change of clothes matches lotsa of them in a good zip lock and a sturdy pan as for the first aide kit - not bandaids - like a surgical kit, sutures and all not so much you can't take it with you in a pack for miles of hiking sandy has the jest of it for city folks - country folks are a bit different flashlights are useless after the batteries die we don't pack them the dog can find its own food the cell phones ain't gonna work anyways once the towers are down nobody around to hear a whistle bears been poopin in the woods for eons, good enough for me no cans or opener - too heavy to pack around moist towelette...........??????????........ only a chick would think of that - a bar of soap would be handy though i'm gonna tote my gun, my knife and fishin line don't need much else - the soap would be nice - but i will concentrate on survival first = bathin later they sell the fancy water purification tablets iffin you aren't smart enough to build a fire to boil water before you drink it
