How to get rid of Ants in pot plants?

  • Hi ppl, I have ants in my pot plant making nests in the plants how can i get rid of them?, we have had a lot of rain over the last 2 weeks over 250mm everything is extremely wet they are making nests in the plant stems and the underside the leaves, Mainly on Orchids and bat plants I want something obviously safe for the plants and preferable safe for humans and animals as well. The pots are to big to be emerge under water to remove the ants.

  • Answer:

local nursery will have countless insecticides that would be safe to use around yourself and the plants, if they are nesting in the soil use a water based product that you would drench the soil with for a pretty much instant fix.

For you orchids- Submerging them in water for about 15 minutes will get the ants out of the orchid mix. Then washing the roots off and changing the soil will get rid of the ants. Some insecticide on the soil of the other plants will kill the ants. The soil will need changing.

Antrid. Just pour some around the pot plant in a circle. The ants collect it like food and take it into the community. All the ants eat it and die. It sounds mean but hey, circle of life :s Good luck :) Fern xx

Set them outside in full sun for 24 hours, which will give the ants the chance to leave and find a better home. Preferably place them out in the open near the road.
