How to get rid of the silverfish in a house?

How can I get rid of the bugs without an exterminator?

  • A few months ago, we moved into a really tiny house and we only have the upper floor of that very tiny house. Silverfish seem to love it, no matter how clean the house is. In fact, we clean the house every week, yet they still remain in my room. I'm 14 and being the teenager that I am, my room is pretty messy. I have clothes on the floor and stuff and since the room's tiny, it's pretty easy for bugs to remain hidden. I'm going to make sure my room's a lot cleaner, and I rarely see them, but it's happened like 3 or 4 times now and I keep feeling like a bug murderer (yeah.. i'm a vegetarian :3). Anyways, I just saw one in my bed and that really disgusts me because I don't want to be sleeping on something that has bugs crawling all around and it could get worse. I think I saw a couple other difference species as well, but I'm not sure if I was just being paranoid or not. So if I keep a clean room, what else should I do? There's been some bugs in my sister's room too and hers is really clean. We didn't have this problem in our other house, but we do live in Vancouver and the houses are made out of wood here, if that makes a different.

  • Answer:

the silverfish are originating from the attic space an d walls, especially if it is an old building..having the attic treated can help, and treating the entry points from the ceiling and walls will keep them out of sight...if by chance the house has wooden shingles or had been re-shingles that just covered up the wooden shingles the silverfish will always be an issue.

I might sound like a parent :)) but tidy up/clean your room so bugs won't have places to hide and... stay. Also when eating food try eating on top of the plate so crumbs won't fall on the floor and won't attract bugs

Two words: Bug spray

The silverfish are coming in from outside from a damp place. Powder, what ever kind you have, will dry them out. Some cooking oil in containers under the sinks will attract them and kill them when they crawl in. They like the oil.

I've heard 100% pure eucalyptus oil keeps bugs away (try putting it in an oil burner with a little bit of water)... I know it works for mosquitos...

Silverfish love dampness and paper. They can climb walls and get behind picture frames and eat the paper backing of the frame. Get everything off your floor. Vacuum. You might look in the bathroom, too, and get rid of them in there. I know it's sad to have to kill bugs, but these bugs don't have a real valuable job as far as humans are involved. If you put them out in the yard, chances are they will come back.

Keep your room clean and try some simple remedies like boric acid. Cleaning is the most important thing. Food left around, clutter that provides hiding places are no-nos. Also be sure that whatever you use will not be in areas easily accessible to small children and pets. Good things -- like a bug-free home -- don't come without continued effort. Do try to keep up but if you see just a bug now and then don't sweat it. There are all number of weird little bugs and bacteria in our environment and we survive them every day.
